John S. Curnes was born in Harrison County, in the State of Ohio, on March 8, 1841, and died in Osceola, Iowa, February 18, 1905, at 6:30 o'clock a. m. after an illness lasting about nine weeks.

When he was four years of age, his parents, Wm. and Susan Curnes, moved to Pike County, Illinois, in which county he made his home with his parents until 23 years of age, excepting the time served in the United States army in the war of the rebellion. In 1864 he came to Warren county, Iowa, and resided there until 1887 when he removed to Osceola where he lived until his death.

Mr. Curnes in 1881(ed note: obviously an error) enlisted in the United States army in Co. B, 68th Regiment, Illinois, Vol. Infantry, serving until 1862, when he was honorably discharged. He was a member of tho G, A. R. Post 173 at this place.

In the Autumn of 1864, he was united in marriage to Amanda Pritchett, a daughter of Byrd Pritchett. To them were born four children a daughter, Anna, and three sons, Wm. B., John E., and Fred F. Curnes. The daughter died in infancy and John E. at the age of 23 years. His wife and two sons Wm. B. and Fred F. survive him and were present at his death.
He was a farmer the greater part of his life, however from 1887 to 1903, he was engaged in the stock business in Osceola.

In 1867, he was converted and joined the Christian Union and ten years later he united with the Methodist Episcopal church in which church he has ever since remained, being a member of the Osceola charge at the time of his death.

John H. Curnes was a successful business man. He leaves a comfortable home and leaves his family well provided for. He was a kind husband and an indulgent father. His family will greatly miss him.

He also leaves to survive him two sisters and four brothers; Mrs. Lizzie Campbell of Neillsville, Wis., Mrs. Mary Plummer of Pittsfield, Illinois, Philip and R.F. Curnes of Colorado Springs, George Curnes of Los Angeles, Cal. and A. B. Curnes of Leavenworth, Kansas, none of whom were present on account of the distance to come and sickness in their family.
Funeral services were held February 20, 1905 at 2:30 p. m. from the M. E. church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. W. H. Shipman assisted by Rev. D. C. Franklin, D. D. of the Chariton M. E. church and Rev. H. E. Van Horn of the Christian church, Osceola. His body was laid to rest In Maple Hill cemetery.
