Harvey Kerns was born in Delaware county, Ohio, February 14,1837, and died at his home in Osceola, Iowa, June 3, 1903.

Bro. Kerns lived in Ohio until he was a grown man. When he was eight years of age his father was killed by a falling tree. His mother died while, he was in the army. He came to Iowa when 31 years of age, engaging in the saw mill business in Wayne county, but living in Osceola.

He was married in Osceola to Ella Morris, June 6, 1871, with whom he lived happily until the union was broken by his death. To this union were born seven children, five girls and two boys, of whom all survive their father except Ethel, who died in 1891 at the age of sixteen years.

Bro. Kerns gave himself to his country August 30, 1862, enlisting in Co. D, 3d Ohio Vol. Cav., and served until the 17th of June, 1865, when he was honorably discharged by general orders at Nashville, Tennessee.
He was a member of the U. V. U. The order had charge of the burial ceremonies and laid their comrade in his last resting place.

He gave his heart to the Master at Union Chapel Church of Christ, under the preaching of' Bro. Hedricks in 1883. He served the church as a deacon and later as an elder, being elder when the writer began his first pastorate with that church.

Bro. Kerns lived on a farm 4 miles northeast of Osceola until June 15th, 1900, when he moved to his home in Osceola, where he died. His last sickness was long and deadly in its approach.
Ho had not been well since October last, but failed rapidly the last few weeks.
The funeral services were hold in the Christian church Friday in the presence of a large concourse of sympathizing friends; Rov. V. E. VanHorn delivering an impressive sermon. Interment was in Union Chapel cemetery.
