Amanda, daughter of Thomas and Nancy Officer, was born in Marion county, Ohio, June 16, 1832, and departed this life at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Alice Dutton of Des Moines, February 12, 1932, at the age of 89 years, 7 months and 12 days. She was united in marriage to John W. Thurlow April 10, 1856. To this union seven children were born, Mrs. Eva Husinpiller, who preceded her, Silas M., Mrs. Nannie Powers, Mrs. Alice Dutton, Mrs. Lillie Lewis, William J. and Dollie Calhoun.
She came with her husband to Clarke county, Iowa, in 1859 and located on a farm near Lacelle. They removed to Osceola in 1897 where they lived until the death of the husband April 11, 1911.
The remaining years were spent with her children. She converted when a child and on coming to Iowa became a charter member of the M.E. church of Lacelle. After moving to Osceola, she transferred her membership to that place where it remained until death.
No one enjoyed church services or was more loyal than she. She never wanted to miss a service even after almost eighty years spent in the work of her Savior.
Besides the children mentioned she leaves to mourn their loss 27 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and a host of loving friends. The body was brought to Osceola Tuesday forenoon and the funeral services held from the M.E. church conducted by Rev. J.F. McKay and interment made in Maple Hill cemetery.
