J. F. Barton.

James Franklin Barton was born in Des Moines county, Iowa. November 21, 1870, and departed this life March 7, 1915, aged 44 years, 3 months and 15 days. He is the oldest son of James and Mary Jane Barton. With his parents and brothers and sisters, he came to Clarke county in 1885 where he grew to manhood and was united in marriage to Laura M. Darlington January 13, 1891. To this union was born eight children, two sons, Oscar an infant, and Adrian two years of age, and a daughter preceded him to the better land: The remaining six children with the mother were at his bedside at the time of his death. Mr. Barton with his wife united with the United Brethren church at Ottawa in 1906 when Rev. Scholl was pastor. Mr. Barton resided near his father's farm north of Woodburn for twenty-one years, when they moved to Kellerton, Ringgold county in 1912, and again moving in March of this year to Trenton, Mo., where he was suddenly stricken with his last illness and died in the hospital. Mr. Barton's immediate family who remain are Mrs. Josephine Tubbs of Burlington, William and Martha of Osceola, and John W., Ben and Mrs. Henrietta Page of Woodburn.

Mr. Barton was of a sunny genial disposition from childhood till death and numbered his friends by his acquaintances; a kind and indulgent husband and father, a loving and affectionate son and brother, and always ready to accommodate his neighbors. No one went to him for aid and was turned away empty handed. His sudden death was a terrible shock to family and friends alike.

The family brought his body to the old home Monday for burial. The funeral was held in the M. E. church in Woodburn Tuesday morning at 10:30 o'clock conducted by Rev. L. H. Smith of the Ottawa U. B. church and the remains were laid to rest in the Ottawa cemetery to await the resurrection morn.

Note: The obituary states year of birth as 1870 and the headstone is inscribed with the year of birth of 1869.
