William H. Johnson was born Jan, 18, 1843 at Monrovia, Morgan Co., Indiana, and died at New Virginia, Iowa, the early morning of August 6, 1925, aged 82 years, 6 months and 19 days; the last of eight children. When a child he moved with his parents to Fairfield, Jefferson Co. Iowa, later the family moving to Ottawa, Clarke county, Iowa.

On Jan. 16 1862, at the age of eighteen he enlisted in Company D, Fifteenth Iowa Regiment and July 25, 1862, he was discharged for disability at Cornish, Tenn. On Sept. 26, 1864 he re-enlisted in Co. C, Fifteenth Iowa Regiment, serving until May 15, 1865 when he was mustered out at Washington, D. C. He was one of the few survivors of the battle of Shiloh.

August 27, 1865 he married Rebecca Shire Leavel. In three weeks
they would have reached their sixtieth wedding anniversary. To
them were born four children, Frank of Indlanola, Sylvia who died Feb., 26, 1903, Calvin Brook of Egbert, Wyoming, Robert S of Osceola, Iowa.

Besides the wife and three children he leaves 19 grand children and nine great grand children. Early in life he became a member
of the Quaker organization, but moving where it was not convenient to remain a member, he Joined the Methodist Episcopal Church at Woodburn, Iowa, forty years ago. He had in his possession three Bibles which by their well worn condition attest to his companionship with the Book which he read through many times. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. W. H. Farrick at Weldon, where interment was made.
