Vernetta Dove, 88, of Des Moines died Satur­day, Aug. 11, 2012, at
Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. Funeral services were 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 16. at Kale Funeral Home, 301 S.Main St., Osceola. The Rev. Charles Austin, her brother, officiated the service. Inter­ment was in Fremont Ceme­tery, Clarke County.

Vernetta Ruth Austin Dove, daughter of Lula (Akins) and John Austin, was born Dec. 3, 1923, in Lorimor. Vernetta graduated from Lorimor High School as her class salutatorian. On March 12, 1944, Vernetta married Samuel Ralph Dove in Rossville, Ga. Vernetta worked for the ordinance plant near Des Moines dunng WW II, while Ralph served in the U.S. Army. Ralph returned home, and together they operated Dove Trenching in Des Moines until 1963 when they moved to Osceola to begin farming. Vernetta was bookkeeper and part­ner, helping where needed.

She moved to Indianola and shortly after to Des Moines after Ralph died in 2009. Vernetta was a member of Osceola Baptist Church and helped with Baptist Ladies Aide. Vernetta is survived by her sons, Ralph L. (Maggie Grace) Dove of West Des Moines and Richard L (Lin­da) Dove of Pensacola, Fla.; grandchildren, Melissa Ann (Thomas) Helm of Omaha,Neb., Laura Christine Dove of Arlington, Va., Michelle Smithey of Pensacola, Fla., Richard D. (Susan) Dove of Pensacola, Fla., and An­gela (Richard) Malone of Pensacola, Fla; great­ grandchildren, Madeline, Maxwell, Alexis, Brooklyn, Madelyn and Levi; sisters ,Vera Moore of Mount Ayr and Virginia Penfold of Indi­anola, brother Charles Aus­tin of Des Moines; sister-in-law Martha Kay Overton of Des Moines; nephew who lived with them several years during his childhood, Wil­liam Kent (Debbie) Austin of Creston; as well as other relatives and friends. In addition to her hus­band, Vernetta was preced­ed in death by her brothers, Alfred Bodtke, Ed Bodtke, Clair Austin, Clarence Aus­tin and Elmer Bodtke. and sisters, Jean Yoakum and Vi Bodtke- Anneburg.
