J.W. Estes died at his home in Osceola, about five o’clock in the afternoon of May 25th, aged thirty-two years, four months and two days. He had been ill with consumption for nearly a year, but was only confined to the house for a few days before his death.

He was born in 1855 in Keosauqua, Van Buren county, and after leaving there, lived in Agency City awhile, and came to Osceola with his father’s family in 1872. In March 1880, he was married to Miss Lizzie J. Howard, who survives him, and by whom he had four children, three of whom are living.

Mr. Estes for awhile the editor of the Spirit of the Age, a paper published in Osceola, and has always been a correspondent and local writer for papers, possessing more than ordinary literary ability. He had held the office of city assessor for two terms, before last January, with satisfaction to the people, and doing his work with a very complete neatness and accuracy. In this and in all his relations with his fellow men, he displayed a spirit of firmness and integrity, that showed him to be conscientious and honest.

His wife will receive the sympathy of the community in this time of bereavement especially, because it is the second for her in a fortnight, her father’s death being scarcely that long ago.

The funeral services were held at the house May 20th and were conducted by Rev. Franklin. A large number of friends were in attendance, and the remains were then interred in the Osceola, cemetery.
