We find the following account of the death of Orrin M. Millard, formerly of Clarke county, in a Smith County, Kansas paper, the death having occurred there:

The people of this community were not so much surprised as their hearts were made sad at the announcement , last Friday afternoon, of the death of Orrin M. Millard, who had lingered upon the verge of the grave for several months back, from the effects of diseases contracted in the army.

Mr. Millard was born in Athens Co., Ohio, May 18, 1847. At the age of six years, he moved with his parents to Clarke Co., Iowa. Enlisted in Co. B. 18th Iowa Infantry, in February, 1863, and served as a soldier until the close of the war, during which time he contracted the disease from which he died.

He came to Kansas in 1871, locating in Sedgwick county, where he resided a year or two, but after the death of his first wife, returned to Iowa, and from there he went to college at Battle Creek, Mich., but was compelled to abandon his studies because of failing health. In 1875 he married Miss Frances R. Rhodes, and in August, 1876, came to Smith county, where he resided ever since, except two years while he was cashier of the Phillips County Bank at Phillipsburg, which position he was forced to abandon on account of failing health. He was admitted to the bar in February, 1880, and practiced his profession from then until he gave up all business - about two years ago.

During his life-time Mr. Millard was considered a very honorable, upright man, was a kind and true husband and father, loved and respected by all who knew him. His mother who now resides in Atchison, was present and cared for him in his dying hours as only a mother can.

He leaves a wife (our present County Superintendent of Schools) and two children - a boy of about 8 years, and a little girl of 3 years, besides a daughter by his first marriage, who resides with friends in Iowa, near Osceola.

The funeral services were held at the Congregational Church last Saturday conducted by Rev. W. C. Sanford, and Robt. Anderson Post No. 45. G.A.R., and despite the cold weather and the very busy day, a large concourse of friends and relatives followed the remains to their last rating place, in Fairview cemetery.
