Mrs. E. Oneall of Osceola, received a message last Thursday announcing the death of her father, J. R. Stephenson, who for the past twenty-five years has resided in the vicinity of Sheridan, Wyoming. The deceased was 78 years old. Before going to Wyoming he resided in Clarke county. Mr. Stephenson suffered a prolonged illness several years ago from which he had never fully recovered, but he had been confined to his room only about two weeks before he died.
He was born in Monroe county, Iowa. He was a member of a pioneer family, his father and grandfather being members of a colony which settled near Albia in 1839. Mr. Stephenson built the third house erected in the city of Albia.
Mr. Stephenson was married to Miss Lucinda L. Gibson in Clarke county, January 16, 1866. In 1900 he sold his Iowa property and moved to northern Wyoming where he first purchased the Al Willey ranch on Prairie Dog creek. In 1911 he turned his ranch over to his sons and removed to Sheridan where he built the Stephenson home on So. Thurmond street, which is now an apartment house. Later Mr. Stephenson purchased the home south of town.
Mr. Stephenson is survived by his widow to whom he had been married almost 60 years; five daughters, three sons, thirty-one grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and one sister. His daughters are; Mrs. Ella Oneall of Osceola, Iowa; Mrs. Josie Boden of Creston, Iowa; Mrs. Ida Husted of Loveland, Colorado; Mrs. Inez McCoubrey of Sheridan; and Mrs. G. W. Stroud of Prairie Dog Creek. His sons are J. W. Stephenson of Murray, Iowa; Charles Stephenson of Duchess, Alta, Canada; and George Stephenson of Sheridan. One daughter, Mrs. Emma Mitchell, of Murray, Iowa, son's sister, Mrs. T. W. Short, lives died two years ago. Mr. Stephenson at Ranchester.
Mr. Stephenson was a member of the Elks lodge at Sheridan.
Funeral services were held in Sheridan, Wyoming at 2 o'clock last Saturday and interment was made in the Sheridan cemetery.
