Phillip Manahl, son of Albert Charles and Bernice Helen Clearkin Manahl, was born in Ottumwa and died Feb. 13, 1999, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines of congestive heart failure. He was 64.
Mr. Manahl lived in Osceola from 1961 to 1972 when he moved to Urbandale. He was the elementary and junior high school band instructor at Clarke Community Schools nutil the spring of 1973 when he became elementary band director for the West Des Moines School District. He had also lived in Redfield and Waterloo.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Mr. Manahl was a member of the United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Iowa Bandmasters Association. Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Music Fraternity and the Wally Byam Air Stream Trailer Club.
Preceding him in death were his parents; and his first wife, Bonnie Marie Gilbert Manahl.
Mr. Manahl is survived by his wife, Patricia Manahl of Urbandale; a son, Chris Manahl of Glendale, Calif; a daughter, Vicki Manahl-Imazumi of Berkeley, Calif; a brother, Chuck Manahl of Oakhurst, Calif; and a granddaughter, Lilian Manahl-Manahl-Imazumi, of Berkeley.
Funeral services were held Feb. 17 at Westover Funeral Home in Des Moines. Graveside services and interment were at noon in Maple Hill Cemetery at Osceola.
