Greetings, Looking for any info on Joseph and Rose BENDA, my great great grandparents. I've also seen it spelled Rosa or Rosalie. Born in the early 1830s, married around 1854. They lived in Sumner Twnshp, Winneshiek Co. and Utica Twnshp, Chickasaw Co. in the 1860s & 70s, near Spillville. They came to America in Sept. 1861 from Bohemia, arrived in Baltimore I believe. Homesteaded in southern Brule Co. SD in 1881 or 1882. They had a family of 9 children, I believe- John, Mary, Joe, Rose, Anna, Charles, Frances, James and Frank. I'd like to figure out where their farm was located from Spillville. Not sure if they ever owned land there. Joseph was also a carpenter I believe. I think by 1875 they were living in Utica township because I've read that's where James was born that year, my great grandfather. Since Utica adjoins Sumner in Winneshiek, they probably only moved a few miles. I'd also like to find out if Ignatz BENDA, arrived in U.S. around 1853 and a pioneer of Spillville area, was related to Joseph. I don't think they were brothers, maybe cousins? Joseph's mother Kate is listed living with them in the 1880 Census, age 72, but can't find anything else on her. Wondering if she came to the U.S. before or after them with other family. I don't know how many siblings Joseph had or if they came to the U.S. Thank you to anyone who might see this and be able to provide any tidbits of info.
