Thanks to more help, this time from a posting on the Taylor Family Genealogy Forum on Genealogy.com by Bob Frink on November 17, 1999, I just learned more about the Fitzsimmons-Taylor connection.

Bob says J.N. Taylor was Joseph Nelson Taylor, born in Janesville, Wisconsin, 1863, son of Luther and Maria Jacobs. He was married twice: first to Maria Tressia Kubal who may have died, and second to Melda Fitzsimmons on September 10, 1899 as shown in an earlier posting.

Taylor died in Biggar, Saskatchewan on July 4, 1934.

I was not able to find Taylor in the 1880 census because he is listed as Nelson Taylor living with his family in Chickasaw County, so he may have gone by "Nelson" as his first name.
