MRS. WM. HEIT, 90 DIES ON TUESDAY FUNERAL TODAY

Mrs. William Heit, one of the city’s oldest residents, died at 11o’clock Tuesday morning, Mar. 19, at St. Joseph’s hospital where she had been a patient for 10 days. Unusually active and well despite her more than 90 years, Mrs. Heit was taken ill six weeks ago and her condition steadily grew more serious until it became necessary for her to undergo major surgery in the hope of finding relief, but she was unable to withstand the further strain and slipped quietly away fortified by the rites of her church and surrounded by her family.

Margaret Papenheim, daughter of John and Therese Papenheim was born September 9, 1855 near Sheboygan, Wisconsin. When 13 years of age the family moved to New Hampton, locating on a farm four miles west of town. Here she completed her education in the district school and grew to womanhood.

On January 9, 1877 she was married to William Heit at North Washington by Fr. Probst. The young couple immediately made their home on the farm six miles southeast of New Hampton that remained their home until 1915 when they retired to the home on South Chestnut Avenue in this city that remained their home as long as they lived. Mrs. Heit’s death occurred January 26, 1934. Two children, a daughter, in infancy, and a son of 14, preceded her in death and she was also the last surviving member of her own family.

One daughter and seven sons remain to mourn her passing. They are John Heit of Charles City, Wm., Frank, Alphonse and Matilda at home and Joseph, A.J., and Martin of New Hampton and vicinity.

The remains were taken to the Larkin Chapel where the Rosary Society met for prayer services Wednesday evening at 7:30.

Funeral rites will be conducted Thursday (today) at nine o’clock, a.m., St. Mary’s Church, the Rev. Fr. Victor Hintgen officiating at the requiem mass. Burial will be in the family lot at St. Mary’s cemetery. Following are pallbearers: B. A. Holschlag, Hubert Laures, Fank Kipp, Martin Houlihan, William DeBettignies and Aloysious Papenheim.
