Robert Frederich Liggett and Marian Della Ligget Laid to Rest
Funeral services for Robert Frederich Ligget and his daughter Marian who met a tragic death on June 16{?}, by drowning in the Cedar river at Ripley bridge, were held from the Methodist Church Thursday, June 27 at 10 a. m., Rev. E. E. Clenemnts{sic}, the pastor officiating. The attendance of sympathizing friends exceeded the capacity of the church, it being the largest funeral ever held in Nashua. The floral tributes were profuse and beautiful.
A double quartet of eight girls from the High School Choirs, of which Marian was a member, sang two selections, and Mr. Alfred Peters sang a solo Miss Mary Kout presided at the piano.
Rev. Clements took as the subject of his message, “God Our Refuge,” taking his theme from the second verse of the 61st Psalm: “When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the Rock that is higher than I.” The speaker tried to bring out the thot{sic} that in great affliction, such as had befallen this family one should not attempt to rely on themselves but should look to a higher power for help and comfort.
The Nashua community has seldom been shocked as it has been over the loss of Mr. Ligget and his daughter Marian.
Mr. Ligget was named Robert Frederich when born to Robert and Margaret Ligget in Riverton township, December 2, 1884. He spent his entire life on the farm where he was born. It was here he brought his bride, Miss Mina Jane Goodner, when they were married Feb. 29, 1912. Mr. And Mrs. Ligget were the parents of four daughters, Marian, Edna, Lucille and Laura. Edna passed away when in her first year of age. Mr. Ligget was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He was an industrious man caring more for the affairs of his family and his home than anything else in life. His death removes from this community one of its best citizens.
Marian Della Ligget was born on the Ligget farm in Riverton township. She came to her death when but little past her 16th birthday, she having been born on the 4th day of April, 1913. She had just finished two years in the Nashua high school where she was a popular and well liked student. She was a dutiful and pleasant young lady, and took a great interest in all activities of the school, being a member of the High School Chorus and engaged in many other school projects. She was active in the Epworth League and the Sunday school of the Methodist church, where she will be greatly missed. The young people of her acquaintance certainly mourn the sudden departure of this modest and upright friend.
There are left to mourn the untimely death of Mr. Ligget and Marian, Grandmother Ligget, Marian’s mother, her two sisters, Lucile and Laura, Mr. Ligget’s brothers, Henry and Thomas of Nashua, Charles of Charles City, and his sister Miss Minnie Ligget of Nashua, and a number of more distant relatives.
