John Welch Dies at St. Paul; Born in Jerico in 1863
Body Brought to Reilly Ridge For Burial; His Wife, Two Sisters and One Brother Survive.
LAWLER: John Welch died at his home in St. Paul, Minn., Saturday morning, Feb 26, at 6:30 o’clock. He was born at Jerico, May 23, 1863, the son of Thomas and Nancy Welch. Mr. Welch was married to Bridget Galligan at Lawler, Iowa, Jan 7, 1904. They made their home on the homestead at Jerico until seventeen years ago, when they retired and moved to St. Paul.
The funeral services were held at St. John’s Catholic church at St. Paul, Monday morning at 7:30. A solemn high mass was read, with Rev. James Doyle, as celebrant, Rev Francis Welch, as deacon and Rev Thos. Coleman as sub-deacon. After the mass the body was taken to Reilly Ridge and interment made at the Sacred Heart cemetery. Paul bearers were Eugene Commerford, Joseph and Clarence Welch, Ray Shekleton, Thos. McDonough and John Alton. Those who accompanied the remains were James Welch Sr., Clarence, Joseph and Thos. Welch, Rev. Francis Welch, Mrs. John T. Alton, Thos. Ryan, O.J. Mulcahy, Mildred Commerford and Nora Shekleton.
John Welch spent his youth and early manhood on the old homestead among the pioneers of Chickasaw County. He was very successful as a farmer and knew all the latest and modern methods of tilling the soil. In his passing this community has lost a valuable citizen, one who was fearless in expounding his convictions, but broad-minded enough to grant to others all the privileges he demanded for himself. Always one of the pillars of the Catholic church, he gave willingly of his time and energy for its upbuilding. And thus passeth from the mortal into the immortal life, another honored and beloved pioneer and useful and distinguished citizen. Peace to his ashes and eternal glory and happiness to his immortal soul.
He leaves to mourn his loss, his beloved wife, two sisters Mrs. Mary Commerford of St Paul, Minn, Mrs. Margaret Solberg of Dougherty, and one brother, James Welch, St. Paul, Minn. And a number of relatives and friends. He saw the message in the stars and in the lowly clod. As he walked along the road of life, on his journey back to God. To Mrs. Welch, who has been so devoted in her care of him during his illness, and to all his relations, deepest sympathy is extended.
