Mary Ann Whelan 1841 – Nov 18, 1893
Lizzie Whelan 1875 – Nov 21, 1893

New Hampton Courier, New Hampton, IA., Thurs., Nov 23, 1893, p.1, col.4
WHALEN – At her home in Jacksonville Township in the fifty-third year of her age. Deceased was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Reilly who came from Ireland to this country in 1832 and settled first in Canton, Mass. where the subject of this brief sketch was born. With her parents she came to this county in 1851 and married Thos. Whalen in 1859 and bore him sixteen children, twelve of whom survived her, and eleven still live in this county. Mrs. Whalen was an excellent mother and devoted wife, consistent with the religion which she professed her household duties were her constant care and her large family have been trained in the nurture and admonitions of the Lord, while her husband found in her a real helpmeet whose wifely care and loving smile for all the long years made his home a very resting place from the annoyances that fall to the lot of every mortal. She was a good neighbor and kind friend and will be sorely missed by those who were fully cognizant of her many virtues, but most of all by the husband and children who fully appreciated the loving kindness of the devoted wife and mother.
The funeral was held Sunday and the body was laid to rest to wait the will of Him whom she served and who said; “I am the resurrection and the life.”
On Tuesday the daughter of this excellent mother closed her eyes to the scenes of earth and her spirit went to join her mother’s in the land of everlasting spring and flowers. Lizzie Whelen was a bright young lady in the first dawn of young womanhood being in her eighteenth year and beloved in the home and by all who knew her for many charming ways and bright sunny disposition. This double affliction nearly prostrates Mr. Whelan and his heart is very sore but he will look to the source of all comfort at this time, and find that he is not forsaken nor willingly afflicted but that the Almighty doeth all things well. The funeral was held Wednesday and the body was consigned to the tomb until the time when the call shall be made. Mr. Whelan and the children and friends have the sympathy of all who know them in this time of great bereavement.
