Verna Otteson
Verna Otteson, 69, Manly, a former New Hampton resident, died Monday, January 17 at North Iowa Mercy Center in Mason City after suffering a heart attack. Funeral services were 11 a.m. Friday, January 21 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Lawler with Reverend Jim Davis officiating. Isabel Johann was organist and accompanied those in attendance as they sang “What A Friend We Have in Jesus”, “Amazing Grace” and “How Great Thou Art.” Interment was in Crane Creek Cemetery with Keith Jerdee, Richard Bill, Leslie, Keith and Lorie Miller and David Qualley serving as casket bearers.
Verna Emma Arndt was born March 9, 1924 at Elma, the daughter of Frank and Wilhelmina (Flugge) Arndt. She attended school in Elma and was married to Louis Ross in 1942. They were later divorced. She was married to Arthur Otteson on April 20, 1979 in Rochester, MN. They made their home on the Otteson farm north of New Hampton until Art’s health failed in 1982. Art died in 1988 and Verna moved to Manly in 1989.
Survivors include one daughter, Jean Hungerford, Manly; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Carl Arndt, Charles City; four sisters, Hattie Miller, Elma, Rosella Ross, Rockford, Dorothy Schreiber, Osseo, MN, Esther Owen, Waterloo; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Linda Hurst; one brother, Leo Arndt; one sister, Mamie Embretson. Visitation was from 3-8 p.m. Thursday at Conway Funeral Home in New Hampton and at the church an hour prior to service time.
