Sister Lois (Leola) Tilkes, died on Wednesday, May 8, 2019 at Clare House.The Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, May 13, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. in Francis Chapel at Mount St. Francis. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 12, 2019, with a funeral vigil at 7 p.m. in Francis Chapel.
Sister Lois was born on April 20, 1937, in New Hampton, Iowa, to John and Leone (Diederich) Tilkes.
She entered the Sisters of St. Francis August 25, 1955, and made final profession of vows August 12, 1961. Sister received her high school education at St. Mary’s School, North Washington, Iowa. She ministered as a homemaker in Iowa at Waterloo-St. Mary’s, Garnavillo, Hospers, Dyersville, Cedar Falls-North American Martyrs Retreat House, and Dubuque at Immaculate Conception Academy, Holy Trinity, Holy Ghost, Mary of the Angels, and Mount St. Francis.
Sister is survived by her sisters: Jeannette Hillegas and Grace Pittman; her brother Nick (Jean) Tilkes; her sister-in-law Florence Tilkes; her brother-in-law Richard Lansing; nieces and nephews, and her Franciscan sisters with whom she shared over 62 years of her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters Carolyn (Richard) Havel and Madelyn Lansing; her brother Lawrence Tilkes; and brothers-in-law Wayne Pittman, Brian McClure, and Bob Hillegas.
The Sisters of St. Francis express their thanks to Hospice of Dubuque for their care and concern.
