DRANK CARBOLIC ACID.
Suicide of C. C. Pierce, Well Known Farmer of Chickasaw County, by Poison.
New Hampton, Iowa, Dec. 28.—Sunday evening, C. C. Pierce, of Utica township, this county, told his boys that on Monday morning they were to get up and build the fire and do the farm chores, as he should not get up in time. Accordingly they built the fire and did the chores, and then went to the father’s room to call him, when they found him dead. There was a dipper by the side of the bed showing that it had contained carbolic acid, and the mouth and tongue were eaten away, showing clearly that he had taken a large quantity.
Mr. Pierce was 63 years old, and a man of good habits and respected by all who knew him. His life was insured in three old line companies, aggregating $12,000. He was in New Hampton last week and made his will, and went around and settled all his bills, and went to Lawler on Saturday and settled all bills and closed up all his business. There is no known cause why he did the act, other than his brooding over money matters.
