James Safford Commits Suicide at Mason City.
Mason City, Iowa, Feb. 14.—Special. Resisting stoutly all efforts to save him, James Safford, the owner of the bathing parlors in this city, committed suicide last night by taking a dose of three ounces of laudanum, which he had secured during the morning at the drug store, on a plea of using it for medicine for customers. He had emptied the contents of the bottle in a half a glass of water and while holding the door against his assistants at the parlors, drank the contents. He died two hours later. He claimed family troubles as the cause. He leaves a wife and three children. He came here last November from New Hampton, where his brother resides. He has a sister in Maquoketa and was 53 years old.

Transcriber’s Note: Find-a-Grave shows he is buried in New Hampton Cemetery and was born in 1853.
