There will ever be a sense of loss when a good citizen dies. "When they wrap the drapery of their couch about them, and lie down to pleasant dreams." When there is crape on the door, and the "mourners go about on the street." The clods that fall upon their earthly house, falls not heavier, nor startles the ear more quickly than the blow, and the loss startles the community in which they live.
John Dayton, who departed this life Wednesday, October 18, 1899, was this kind of a citizen. For forty-four years he went in and out before us an esteemed citizen, a just man. No greater elogy could be pronounced upon any man.
