Daniel Berrien Sneeden was born in New York City, November 20, 1811, and died in New Hampton December 24, 1900. From an early age, deceased wall thrown upon the world by the death of his parents. At the age of nine years, he was taken to the home of Judge Thompson, of Great Bend. Pennsylvania, where he grew to manhood and laid the foundation for many of the strong characteristics which distinguished his maturer years.

The father of Daniel Sneeden was a sailor and met his death while unloading his vessel. Likewise his brother David followed the seas, but It was not until young Sneeden had grown to manhood that be found this seafaring brother. After this reunion he and his brothers and sisters lived together happily for several years. His mother belonged to the Berrien family in New York city, which, In tbs early days of the ninteenth century, owned a large tract of land now the site of the great Trinity church. Both the father and mother were of strong and vigorous French and Holland stock, and their children had the good fortune to be well born, a trait Daniel always manifested. In 1842 Mr. Sneeden turned his face to the west and set out from New York city for Whitewater, Wis.

Traveling in those days was by boat and by stage and the journey was a long and tedious one. From Whitewater he went to Madison, the territorial capital of Wisconsin, and engaged In the mercantile business with James H. Shields. Here in 1847 be was married to Miss Susan Phelps, who now survives him. He was admitted to the bar of Wisconsin and was justice of the peace for some time at Omro, where he lived prior to coming to Iowa in 1871 and locating in New Hampton. He was elected justice of the peace soon after coming here he held the post almost continuously until his failing health made it necessary for him to retire from active business life. His surviving children are Mrs. Alice F. Guest and Mrs. Lawrence N. Sherman, of this place, and Mrs. Blanche C Boyce of Mitchell, South Dakota.

Daniel Sneeden was a man of strong convictions, and fine sensibilities. He loved the right and hated wrong, and in his transactions with all men justice was his ruling principle. He was loved by by his family and friends and respected by all. His body was laid to rest on Wednesday, the 26th,in Graceland cemetery, the funeral services being held at the Congregational church, Rev Pottle officiating.
