Ralph M. Ries, 84, of Elma, died Monday December 3, 2001 at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City of natural causes.

Funeral services will be 11:00 am Thursday, December 6 at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma with Reverend John Hemann officiating. Theresa Burke will be the organist and will accompany the granddaughters serving as vocalist as well as the Immaculate Conception Church Choir singing “How Great Thou Art,” “Amazing Grace,” “Be Not Afraid,” & “On Eagles Wings.” Lector will be Sr. Phyllis Ries.

Eucharistic ministers will be Chuck & Elaine Ries and Lyle Ries. Gift bearers will be sons, Gary L., John, Ed R., and Mike L. Ries. Mass servers will be Joanna Ries, Daniel Ries, Cory Gebel, & Michael Laures. Ralph’s wife and children will place the pall.

Interment will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery in North Washington with Jeff Laures, Brian Laures, Doug Laures, Bob Schaudenecker, Kevin Ries, Mark Ries, Kent Ries, and Patrick L. Ries serving as casket bearers. Honorary casket bearers will be the granddaughters Emily C. Ries, Julie Gebel, Lori Marsh, Mary Jo Urbatsch, Kelli Zimmerman, Janae Wilson, Deb Ries, Nicole A. McCurdy, and Jessica J. Mathews as well as the Elma Knights of Columbus Council #4144 and Catholic Order of Foresters St. Benedict Court #1245 of North Washington.

Friends may call after 3 pm Wednesday at Conway Funeral Home in Elma where there will be a 4 pm rosary society rosary and a 7 pm scripture service followed by a combined Knights of Columbus and Catholic Order of Foresters Rosary.

Ralph M. Ries was born March 6, 1917 near North Washington, the son of Ed & Anna (Nosbisch) Ries. He attended Immaculate Conception Catholic School in North Washington. After his schooling he farmed with his family on the family farm. On Tuesday, November 26, 1940 he was united in marriage to Mary Schwickerath at Immaculate Conception Church in North Washington. After their marriage the couple farmed in Chickasaw County for 7 years. In 1947 the couple purchased a farm in Howard County (1 mile west of Elma). In the couple moved to Elma in 1975 and he continued farming until his retirement in 1980. Ralph enjoyed carpentry and woodworking, fishing, traveling, and playing cards, but his great love and enjoyment was spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Elma, Elma Knights of Columbus Council #4144, 4th degree Knights of Columbus (Davis Assembly,) and the Catholic Order of Foresters St. Benedict Court # 1245 of North Washington.

Ralph is survived by his wife Mary of 61 years; 2 daughters Elaine (Chuck) Laures of Osage and Marilyn (Gary) Schaudenecker of Alta Vista; 4 sons John (Cathy) Ries of Elma, Gary L. (Mary Jo) Ries of Elma, Ed R. (Jean) Ries of Spring Valley, MN, and Mike L. (Janice) Ries of Cresco; 17 grandchildren; and 24 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 4 brothers his twin Raymond, Harold, Leonard, and Cletus in infancy; 2 daughters Janice and Marianne in infancy.
