OBITUARY OF THOMAS R. BOICE

Veteran of Civil War, a Pioneer of This County and a Man Loved and Esteemed By All

Thomas R. Boice after many months of slow decline sank peacefully to rest and went to his reward on Friday, March3, 1922 at the ripe age of 88 years,6 months, and 10 days.

He was well known and highly respected in this community where he had resided almost sixty years.

Thomas R. Boice was born August 24, 1833, in Binghamton, N. Y.

When he was two years of age his parents moved to North Hadley, Mass. where he lived until he was 21 years of age when he went to Rockford, Ill. On April 1, 1857 he was united in marriage to Sarah A. Rodd. To this Union six children were born, two dying in infancy.

On August 18, 1862, he enlisted in Company B 14th Iowa Infantry Volunteers, served as a corporal and was wounded in the service. After leaving the hospital he was placed in charge of a company of soldiers whose duty it was to guard U. S. military exchange prisoners at Rock Island Arsenal, where prisoners from the Union and Rebel forces were exchanged. His oldest brother, George A., who was in the service at the same time, was taken prisoner and died to Andersonville prison in 1864. Mr. Boice was discharged from service July 17, 1865 and came to Bradford, Iowa, purchasing the land that is now the old Boice homestead near Republic. He attended services in the Little Brown Church until he, together with the late Hiram Bailey and others, organized the Sunday school at Richland Center (now Republic).

Later he moved to Nebraska, where in his early seventies he lost his companion. In December, 1874, he returned to Chickasaw county, where he was united in marriage to Mary E. Rodd. To this union six children were born.

Mr. Boice retired from active farming about sixteen years ago and moved to Nashua, where he lived until his death.

Besides his wife he is survived by ten children, namely: Alvin S., of Pasadena, Cal.; Etta M. Farnum, of Salt Lake City, Utah; Ella B. Durston, of Lodi, Calif.; Lillie H. McGovern, of Waterville, Minn.; Royal H., William T., Mrs. Phila C. Cory, Hiram W., Mrs. Minnie D. Hinnson, and Calvin W. Boice, all of Chickasaw County.

In the passing of Mr. Boice we feel that an influence for the bigger and better things of life has been lost to this community, and a kind and gentle presence from the home.

Awaiting the arrival of his son Alvin from California, the funeral was not held until Thursday, March 9, at 2 o’clock at the Congregational church, conducted by Rev. Edward Lee., and the body was consigned to Mother Earth at Greenwood cemetery.

“Life, we’ve been long together
Through bright or cloudy weather
‘Tis hard to part when friends are dear
Perhaps ‘twill cause a sigh, a tear;

Then steal away, give little warning
And bid us not tonight.
But in some faired clime
Bid us Goodmorning.”
