NEW HAMPTON - Delbert C. Smith, 87, New Hampton, died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000 of natural causes at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 9 at Conway Funeral Home in New Hampton with Rev. David McBride, pastor of the United Church of Christ, presiding. Kim Hilgendorf was organist. Hymns included "Precious Hiding Place" and "The Old Rugged Cross".

Interment with military honors was in the New Hampton Cemetery. Casket bearers were Stewart Stone, David Gorman, Joe Oppold, Louie Hugh, Dave Swenumson and Jerry Clemons.

Visitation was from 4-7 p..m. Friday, Sept. 8 and also an our before service time at the funeral home.

Delbert Carson Smith was bom May 31,1913 at Oskaloosa, the son of Fred E. and Henrietta (Carson) Smith. He graduated from high school in Chicago and from William Penn College in Oskaloosa. He attended post -graduate school at Missouri State, Drake University and the University of Iowa. Delbert married Betty Jean Hartman on April 17, 1942. He was a Machinist Mate 1st Class in the Naval Air Force during World War II. He played baseball in the minor leagues at Clinton for the Dodger organization. Delbert was a school teacher, coach and administrator for 35 years and a member of the American Legion. Delbert and Betty have been residents of New Hampton since 1977 and he was employed at Hub Clothing.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Jean; a daughter, Claudia Hopkey, Mason City; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Michele Smith, Cedar palls; four sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; a son, Delbert L. Smith: two grandchildren.
