DIED – At his home two miles northeast of this city, Saturday, Aug. 23, 1902, Patrick Mangan, aged 85 years. The deceased was born in County Roscommon, Ireland, January 2, 1817, where he lived until about 18 years of age when he immigrated to this country and located in New Jersey, where he resided for several years, then moved to Ohio and about 50 years ago came to Iowa and Chickasaw county, when the country was new and almost a wilderness and has been a continuous resident ever since.

This is in brief a sketch of the life of Mr. Mangan, but we must read between the lines for what he passed through before his pilgrimage on this earth was ended. We see him as a young man, unknown, and in an unknown land, probably without other means of support than that earned by his own hands. We see him as he came west and settling in virgin country and commence his combat with nature to clear a home and make a place for himself and his family. The trials of those pioneer days, when the improved machinery of today was an unknown quantity, were more strenuous than can ever be realized by the present generation, and we honor these old pioneers for their part in the upbuilding of a great county and state.

Mr. Mangan is survived by four sons and two daughters as follows. Mr. L.M. Gilbert of Chicago, Mrs. Charles Hooper of St. Louis, Thomas of Waukoma, John of Omaha, Felix of Chicago and Joseph at home.

The funeral was held Monday morning at the Catholic church in this city, Rev. P. Garrahan conducting the services, and his remains laid to rest in Mt. Carmel cemetery adjoining the church. The sympathy of all is extended to the bereaved family. Lawler Dispatch.
