Mrs. Hughes had been very ill a year and a half ago, but had recovered from that illness and since then had again been active. On Wednesday she complained of not feeling well and the doctor was called but her condition did not become alarming until Saturday morning.

Carrie Rowley Hughes, daughter of Charles and Abbie Rowley was born on October 19, 1872, in the home at that time standing across the street form the public school in Ionia. She lived her childhood and early girlhood days there and attended the school which was near her home.

When she was but three years of age she was left without a mother. When she was 16 years old she went to Chickasaw and lived for several years at the home of her sister, Mrs. Cora Hayden, and assisted her with the store and post office work.

It was at this sister's home that she was married to Charles E. Hughes of Chickasaw, on October 13, 1891. They established their home on a farm at Chickasaw. Five children were born to this union.

It was in 1911 that they celebrated their golden wedding; in their octagon shaped farm home in Chickasaw. A short time later they moved to the home of their son Neil and family in Ionia where she made her home until her death.

Mrs. Hughes was a member of the Chickasaw Baptist church since March 2, 1898. She taught a Sunday School class of junior girls for many years and was president of the Chickasaw Ladies Aid for a long period of time. While residing with her son and family she was a regular worshiper at the Ionia Congregational Church and assisted with its Ladie's Aid.

She was a member of the Royal Neighbors of the Ionia camp for 49 years and for 25 years she served as oracle. For several years she served on the Chickasaw school board and was active in the Chickasaw P.T.A., serving as its president for some time. In moving to Ionia, she became a member of the Ionia P.T.A. At the time the Farm Bureau was organized, Mrs. Hughes was a leader in the women's division of this group.

She is survived by one son Neil and his wife, Mildred, one granddaughter, Delilah Hughes and one sister, Mrs. Maude Howard of Tehachapi, California.

Preceding her in death besides her husband, who died June 1, 1915, were four children: Hazel at the age of one, a twin son, Harold at the age of 11 months, Wave at the age of 17 and Darold, the twin of Harold, when he was 20 years old during World War I; also her only grandson, Charles Edward Hughes who died when he was five.
