Darold Edward Hughes, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Hughes, was born near Chickasaw, Iowa, on December 5, 1897, and died at Ames, Iowa, on Sunday, October 13, at 5 p.m. of pneumonia, aged 20 years 10 months and 8 days.

His school days were divided among the following places: Elma, Keashing school near Chickasaw, two years high school at Ionia and Nashua, where he graduated from the high school in May, 1918. On October 1, 1918, he enrolled in the Students Army Training Corps at Ames and was a member of Co. 4. He selected a course in agriculture and was engaged in its pursuit while he was stricken with the prevailing disease of influenza which developed into pneumonia and resulted in his death. His parents were with him when he passed away.

On March 15, 1912, Darold was baptized at Nashua, and on April 7 of the same year he united with the Baptist church of Chickasaw, of which church he remained a faithful and consistent member until the day of his demise. He leaves to mourn his seemingly untimely departure, his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Hughes, also his brother Neil who lives at home. These are the only members of his immediate family who survive him; two sisters and one brother having preceded him to the Great Beyond. Mention ought to be made of another who, though not a member of the immediate family, yet was near him and to whom he was betrothed, Miss Evelyn Horsch.

Besides these, Darold leaves a step-grandmother, uncles, aunts, cousins and a host of friends. He was a young man of clean habits beloved in the home and in the community, quiet and unostentatious, always considerate of others. His passing has made a deep impression on all who have been associated with him and these, with many others, offer their sincere sympathy to the family and friends in their hour of sorrow.

The funeral was held Wednesday, October 16, from the home at Chickasaw and was conducted by Rev. T. J. Giblette of New Hampton, who preached a touching sermon and paid a high tribute to the young man whom he said had given his life to his country as truly as thought he had died in action on the battle field in France. The body was interred in the beautiful Greenwood cemetery.
