Obituary for Darlene C. McGowan

Darlene C. McGowan age 79 of New Hampton, Iowa died Sunday, May 15, 2016, at her home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 19, 2016, at Holy Family Parish, New Hampton with Rev. Mark Osterhaus celebrating the Mass. The pall will be places by Linda and Brad Steege. Lector for the service will be Brad laures. Presenting the offertory gifts will be Madonna Laures and Bob Burgart. Organist Ann Bennett, will accompany the Immaculate Conception Men's Choir.

Interment will be at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Lawler. Pallbearers will be Nate Steege, Gavin Steege, Collin Steege, Jamison Steege, Brad Laures, Lynn Laures, Stan Burgart, Mike Burgart and Steve Burgart. Honorary Pallbearers will be The Catholic Order of Foresters.

Friends may greet the family 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home in New Hampton where there will be a 6:30 p.m. Parish Scripture Service. Visitation continues an hour prior to the Mass at the church on Thursday.

Darlene Clara McGowan was born October 13, 1936, in Chickasaw County, IA, the daughter of Amos M. and Hilda E. (Schluetter) Burgart. The family were members of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in North Washington where she received her Sacraments. She attended St. Mary’s School in North Washington and graduated in the Class of 1954. While in school she was a very good athlete pitching for the North Washington girls team. She was an excellent pitcher and teams from all around the area knew her name.

On her birthday, October 13, 1962 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, North Washington, she was united in marriage to John George McGowan, a Lawler native, To this union two children were born; a daughter, Linda and a son, Dennis, who died as in infant in 1972. Her husband John died on January 13, 1986 at the early age of 50. Darlene worked at the former First National Bank for many years and later retired from K & W Motors. She was an avid bowler and golfer until her last years. She loved playing cards and was a passionate reader, spending many hours at the New Hampton Library. Darlene was also an ardent Hawkeye and Cubs fan. The time she treasured the most, was the time she spent with her grandchildren. She will be dearly missed.

Darlene is survived by her daughter, Linda (Brad) Steege of Fredericksburg; one brother, Robert Burgart of North Washington; one sister, Madonna Laures of New Hampton; grandchildren, Nate (Kerstin) Steege and their children, Emree and Elin all of Waverly, Gavin (Kylie) Steege and their son, Treyton all of Wavelry, Collin (Jessica) Steege and their children, Kayson, Krew of New Hampton and Jamison (Payton Hilton) Steege of Fredericksburg; brother-in-law, Tom (Anita) McGowan of Lawler; sisters-in-law, Julie Wiedner of Coralville and Peggy (Tom) Mennie of Scottsdale, AZ; many nieces and nephews; special friend, Ralph Koenigsfeld.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; her infant son, Dennis; a brother and sister-in-law, Gerald (Rita) Burgart; brother-in-law, John Wiedner; mother and father-in-law, Ray and Mamie McGowan; niece, Karin Wiedner; and nephew, Timothy Laures.
