Obituary for Russell Squires

Russell Squires age 77 of Charles City died Wednesday, May 18, 2016, at the VA Medical Center, Iowa City.

Funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday May, 24, 2016 at Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home -- Olson Chapel in Nashua with Rev. John Tunnicliff presiding.

Internment will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Nashua with Marty Squires, James Bentley, Larry Donath, Eric Dreesman and Kenny Squires serving as pallbearers. Military honors will be conducted by Nashua VFW Post #6792.

Friends may greet the family from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Monday May 23, 2016 at the funeral home. Visitation continues an hour prior to the service on Tuesday.

Russell Clayton Squires was born in Auburn, Indiana on June 3, 1939, the son of Kibbe and Margaret (Schultz) Squires. He attended school in Auburn until the 9th grade when his family moved to Nashua. He completed his education in Nashua and was a 1959 graduate of Nashua High School.

After graduation Russell went into the Air Force and was originally stationed in Hawaii. After that the the Air Force sent him to West Virginia before going back to Hawaii and eventually retiring from the Air Force out of Colorado, in 1976. Russell then moved to Arizona where he met Loretta Souza while he was working at a bowling alley. The couple eventually moved back to Iowa and settled down in Charles City.

Russell enjoyed bowling, especially since that is where he met Loretta, it always held a special place in his heart. He also enjoyed going fishing and playing cards.

Russell is survived by his special friend of 28 years, Loretta Souza; two sons, Rusty Squires of Waverly and Jeff Squires of Minnesota; one daughter, Carrie of Minnesota; one brother, Kenny (Sharen) Squires of Shell Rock; one sister, Darlene Williams of Cedar Falls.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Jerry Squires; one sister, Susan Tarr; and one brother-in-law Butch Williams.
