Obituary for Russell Weigel--

Russell A. Weigel age 84 of New Hampton, Iowa, died Friday, March 14, 2014, at New Hampton Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in New Hampton.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at Holy Family Parish-St. Joseph Center, New Hampton with Rev. Mark Osterhaus celebrating the Mass. The pall will be placed on the casket by Bill & Marlene Weigel, Jim and Sharon Weigel. Keith Weigel will serve as the lector. The offertory gifts will be presented by Nicki Weigel, Megan Mahoney and Kim Weigel. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, New Hampton with Jeff Weigel, Brian Schwickerath, Wayne Schwickerath, Bruce Weigel, Joe Weigel and Dennis Heiselman serving as pallbearers.

Friends may greet the family beginning at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday at the church. If so desired, memorials may be made to Holy Family Parish.

Arrangements are with the Hugeback - Johnson Funeral Home in New Hampton.

Russell Ambrose Weigel was born December 7, 1929, on the Weigel family farm near Jerico, Iowa, the son of Irwin V. and Ellen M. (Fitzgerald) Weigel. He received his education at the Meadowland country school near Jerico. Russell enjoyed doing chores and helping on the family farm until his father died in 1965, at which time he remained living with his mother until moving into New Hampton in 1971. Following the death of his mother, Russ remained at home for a few more years until becoming a resident at The Heritage Residence in New Hampton. Due to declining heath he moved to the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in 1999.

In his younger years, he enjoyed going to dances in Lawler and on shopping trips with the staff and residents of the Heritage. Russell’s large family made for many get-togethers that he enjoyed going to.

Survivors include two brothers, Bill (Marlene) Weigel of New Hampton, Jim (Sharon) Weigel of Charles City; one brother-in-law, Ray Schwickerath of Fredericksburg; one sister-in-law, Doris Weigel of Cedar Falls; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Vivian Heiselman, Marie Schwickerath and Virginia Schwickerath; one brother, John “Jack” Weigel.
