Obituary for Marie C. Deutsch--

Marie Catherine Deutsch, age 82, of New Hampton, Iowa, died Wednesday morning, August 8, 2012, at the New Hampton Care Center, with family by her side.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 13, 2012, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, North Washington with Rev. Mark Osterhaus celebrating the Mass. Lector for the service will be Neil Deutsch. Jane Karels will be the organist accompanying the Immaculate Conception Men's Choir. Theresa, Sarah and Annie Deutsch will sing "Amazing Grace". Presenting the offertory gifts will be Marie's grandchildren. Mass Servers will be Riley and Kyle Deutsch. Tom Deutsch and Eleanor Schwickerath will serve as eucharistic ministers.

Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, North Washington with Nancy Franzen, Tom Deutsch, Joseph Deutsch, Bill Deutsch, Neil Deutsch and Denise Pyfferoen as pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers are Curtis Deutsch, Charis Deutsch, Ben Deutsch, Brooke Nott, Eric Nott, Amy Robbins, Theresa Deutsch, Sarah Deutsch, Annie Deutsch, Emma Deutsch, Chelsea Deutsch, Riley Deutsch and Kyle Deutsch.

Friends may greet the family 2:00 – 7:00 p.m. Sunday at Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home in New Hampton where there will be a 4:00 p.m. rosary and a 5:00 p.m. parish scripture service. Visitation continues an hour prior to the Mass at church on Monday.

Marie Catherine Deutsch was born January 25, 1930, on the Freidhof family farm near Elma, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Marie (Lensing) Freidhof. She received her elementary education in Lourdes and was a 1948 graduate of the Elma High School. Marie enjoyed working at the local drug store in Elma as a young girl.

On June 1, 1950, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Lourdes, she married Francis Bernard Deutsch. To this union five children were born, Joseph, Thomas, William, Nancy and Neil.

From the time Marie and Francis were married, they farmed side-by-side. She enjoyed and took great pride in her work on the farm, along with being a mother and grandmother. Besides farming she also was an accomplished seamstress, making quilts, tying comforters, crocheting, plastic canvas stitching and more. She was a very crafty lady and also loved going to garage sales with Francis, always looking for salt and pepper shakers to add to her collection. In her earlier years she also baked and decorated cakes.

Survivors include one daughter, Nancy Franzen of New Hampton; four sons, Joe (Linda Tippie) Deutsch of North English, Iowa, Tom (Rosie) Deutsch of New Hampton, Bill (Martha Davis) Deutsch of Decorah and Neil (Pam) Deutsch of Urbandale; twelve grandchildren, Curtis (Amy Hughes) Deutsch, Charis Deutsch, Ben Deutsch, Brooke (Eric) Nott, Amy Robbins, Theresa Deutsch, Sarah Deutsch, Annie Deutsch, Emma Deutsch, Chelsea Deutsch, Riley Deutsch and Kyle Deutsch; three great-grandchildren, Zia and Silas Hughes Deutsch, Sawyer Nott; one brother, Ray (Alice) Freidhof of Waterloo; four sisters-in-law, Evelyn Deutsch of New Hampton, Evelyn Alessi of New Jersey, Phyllis Dietrich and Gert Freidhof, both of Elma; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Francis on December 6, 2007; four brothers, John Freidhof, Vince Freidhof, James Freidhof and Gene Freidhof; one sister, Florence Fitzgerald.
