Andrew "Andy" Grober, age 80, of New Hampton, IA died Wednesday, November 24, 2010 surrounded by his family at his home.
Andrew Francis Grober was born February 7, 1930, on the family farm near Alta Vista, IA, the son of Jacob and Elizabeth (Ruhoff) Grober. He attended St. Williams School in Alta Vista, graduating in 1948. Andy joined the US Army in August 1953, receiving his basic training at Fort Riley, KS before being stationed at Fort Belvoir, VA. He received his honorable discharge in June 1955 and returned to Alta Vista to begin farming. On January 2, 1956,
Andy was united in marriage to Marcella Sally Marie Dietrich at St. Bernards Catholic Church in Alta Vista. To this union seven children were born. Andy and Sally continued farming southwest of Alta Vista until their retirement in 1998, when they moved to their present home in New Hampton. He was a member of the Holy Family Parish - St. Josephs Center, the Knights of Columbus, and the American Legion. Andy was a past 4-H leader for the Alta Vista Washington Wildcats, and a past member of the Chickasaw County Cattlemens Association. Andy was a volunteer driver for the veterans of Chickasaw and Floyd counties. He enjoyed farming, woodworking, NASCAR, playing cards, and fixing things. Andy always enjoyed visiting his children and grandchildren, and looked forward to their visits.
Andy is survived and deeply missed by his wife of nearly 55 years, Sally of New Hampton; their children, Nancy (Roy) Tieskotter of New Hampton, Leon (Clare) Grober of Alta Vista, Lynn (Scott) Felder of Mankato, MN, Ann Grober of Council Bluffs, IA, John (Lisa) Grober of Christchurch, New Zealand, and Sue (Michael) Jensen of Peoria, IL; 13 grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; one step great-granddaughter; two brothers, Joseph (Betty) Grober of Alta Vista, and Vincent (Margaret) Grober of Seneca, IL; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Emilia Grober; one daughter, Elizabeth, in infancy; and two sisters, Rosella Galing, and Mary Kolbet.
Memorials may be directed to the family.
Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at New Hampton. Military rites will be performed by New Hampton American Legion Post #38 and VFW Post #5238.
Visitation will be on Friday, November 26, 2010 from 3-8pm with a rosary at 4:00 pm and a scriptuaral wake service at 4:30 pmat Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in New Hampton. Visitation will continue at the St. Josephs Gathering Space one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, November 27, 2010 at Holy Family Parish St. Josephs Center in New Hampton with Father Mark Osterhaus and Msgr. Carl Schmitt concelebrating.
