Obituary for Shirley Benson

Shirley N. Benson age 73 of Grand Meadow, Minnesota, and formerly of Nashua, died Sunday, August 18, 2013, at the Grand Meadow Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 22, 2013, at the Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home in Nashua. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Nashua, with Shannon Lindeland, Lacey Priebe, Jamie Pingel, Michelle Lechtenberg, Melissa Martin and Nicole Dreckman serving as pallbearers.

Friends may greet the family 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 21, 2013, at the Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home in Nashua. Visitation continues an hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Shirley Nettie Benson was born January 11, 1940, in Charles City, the daughter of Roy and Lucille (Schmidt) Bluhm. She received her education in Waterloo through the eighth grade. On December 17, 1955, she married Gerry Lee Martin Sr. To this union six children were born. The couple divorced after many years of marriage. Shirley later fell in love with William Benson. The couple were married and held a celebration at the Riviera Supper Club, Lansing, IA, where Shirley worked as a cook for eight years. She enjoyed trout fishing, camping, cooking and in later life, enjoyed game shows, old westerns on TV and her word searches.

Survivors include three sons, Gerry Lee Martin Jr. of Waucoma, Iowa, Keith Allen (Kathy) Martin of Bassett, Marty Mark Martin of Chester; one daughter, Brenda (James) Gronwoldt of LeRoy, MN; ten grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Wanda Huffman of Charles City.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands and two sons, Jeffrey Lynn Martin at the age of 26 and Laverne Martin in infancy.
