John LaVerne Starr, age 95 of Nashua, Iowa died Wednesday, June 10, 2009, at the Bartels Lutheran Home in Waverly.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 13, 2009, at the Bartels Lutheran Home-Good Shepard Chapel with Chaplain Lois Knutson officiating.
Interment with military honors will in Oak Hill Cemetery, Nashua, with Bill Starr, Troy Gilbert, Stan Mehmen, Kevin Gilbert and Kevin Zwanziger as pallbearers. Curtis Pelz and Bob Starr are honorary pallbearers.
Friends may call 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Friday at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua. Visitation continues an hour prior to the service at the Bartels Lutheran Home Chapel.
John was born November 12, 1913, in Colchester, IL, the son of John Henry and Elva Malancy (Kline) Starr. After 8th grade, he went to work at a local garage. He also worked in a Tennessee Silk Mill and later drove school bus.
On September 12, 1940, he married Pearl Florence Ulrich in Bethany Missouri. On May 1, 1943 he was inducted into the United States Army and was assigned to the 279th Station Hospital serving 27 months in the European Theatre of Operations. He drove all types of army vehicles hauling both troops and supplies. He was also stationed in South Wales for 17 months, transferred to France for a short time and then to Germany. John was honorably discharged on April 8, 1946, and awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the European - African Middle Eastern Theatre Service Medal.
After his discharge he worked construction for a time and then began farming, buying his own farm in 1953. John and his wife Pearl worked the farm side-by-side from 1946 until retiring in 1978. The couple also ran a tavern and restaurant in Nashua in the 1950’s and early 1960’s. Pearl died on November 19, 1987. John entered the Bartels Lutheran Home in 2005.
John enjoyed fishing in his younger days, playing cards, owning a cabin in Canada, watching old westerns and army movies. He especially enjoyed rides in the country, Sunday dinners and holidays with his niece, Pat. John liked to read, especially keeping up with current events. He had a very sharp memory with a strong interest in modern farming.
Survivors include one sister, Helen Pelz of Marion, IA; one brother, William Starr of LaPorte City, IA; nieces, Patricia Zwanziger of Nashua, Jeanette Spates of Houston, TX, Doris Jean Mellinger of Indiana and Claudette Willman of Marion, IA; nephews, Curtis Pelz of Minnesota, Bill Starr of LaPorte City, IA and Bob Starr of LaPorte City, IA; many great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a sister, Hazel Wilson; two brothers-in-law, Welston Pelz and Eugene Wilson; sister-in-law, Grace Starr; one niece, Delores Haars.
