Obituary for Paul Diemer

Paul R. Diemer, age 85 of Fredericksburg, Iowa, died Sunday, September 15, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton.

Memorial services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 19, 2013, at St. Peters Lutheran Church - Richfield, rural Sumner with Rev. Wayne Ellingson officiating.

Interment will be in the church cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the Fredericksburg AMVETS.

Friends may greet the family 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 18, 2013 at the Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home, Fredericksburg. Visitation continues an hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

Paul Robert Diemer was born December 30, 1927, in Belle Fourche, South Dakota, the fifth of eight children of Rev. Herman and Marie (Arndt) Diemer.

In 1938, the family moved to Richfield, rural Sumner, Iowa, where he met the love of his life and future wife Ruth Kilcher. He attended high school in Alpha, Iowa, for two years and later attended the Sumner High School. Prior to his graduation he was called to active duty for the United States Marine Corp. After returning from the service he finished his degree and became a graduate from the Alpha High School.

On August 2, 1952, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church-Richfield, in rural Sumner, he married Ruth Kilcher. To this union, a daughter, Gail, was born. The couple moved to Fredericksburg in 1956 and Paul worked in the Gambles Store and as a janitor for the Fredericksburg School District. He also spent time in Chicago becoming a certified electrician. Paul then worked for several companies until retiring on June 1,1999. Paul enjoyed reading, walking, working in his garden and taking special care of his lawn. The joy of his life, however, was time spent playing with his grandsons.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Ruth; one daughter, Gail Carolan of Waucoma; three grandsons, David (Kim) Carolan of Tiffin, Michael (Beth) Carolan of Williamsburg and Brian Carolan and fiancé Amanda Wassenaar of Waucoma; four great-grandchildren, Carter, Madelyn and Tripp Carolan, Ella Wassenaar; four brothers, Gerhard (Joan) Diemer of Fredericksburg, Texas, Max (Dorothy) Diemer of Las Cruces, New Mexico, Harold (Barbara) Diemer of Hawkeye and Kenneth Diemer of Sumner; one sister, Ruth Gaede of Marion; one sister-in-law, Lois Diemer of Cedar Falls.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Gerald Carolan; one brother, Marvin Diemer; one sister, Doris Daeschel; and one brother-in-law, Ralph Gaede.
