Mildred Lucille (Dietz) Caswell – April 21, 1917 – October 6, 2010

Mildred Lucille Caswell, age 93 of Nashua died Wednesday, October 6, 2010, at her granddaughter's home in Waverly.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 8, 2010, at the Hugeback and Chenoweth Funeral Home, Nashua with Chaplain Bill Carpenter officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Nashua with Marvin Runyan, Raymond Dietz, Charlie Dietz, Marty Bohsmann, James Conklin, and Bob Boomgarden serving as pallbearers. George Wagner and Jay Dietz will be honorary pallbearers.

Friends may greet the family 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Thursday, October 7, 2010, at the Hugeback and Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Friday.

Mildred Lucille was born April 21, 1917, on the Dietz family farm in rural Bremer County, the daughter of George and Edith (Masten) Dietz. She attended rural country school. On August 12, 1939, at the Methodist Church in Waverly, she married Harland Caswell. To this union, six children were born.

During her youth, Mildred was the treasurer of the former Six-Mile Grove Church Sunday School. She lived in Bremer and Chickasaw counties her entire life. Family was always first with Mildred, and her most important job was raising her children. She worked for the Nashua School lunch program, and later worked at Sara Lee in New Hampton. For many years, she was a foster grandparent for children in the Charles City school system. Mildred was active at the Chickasaw Centre in New Hampton. She was a great gardener and cook and raised many varieties of berries, melons, and also grew flowers.

Survivors include three sons, Timothy James (Sharon) Caswell of Cedar Falls, Mark George (Nancy) Caswell of Nashua, and Thomas Todd Caswell of Nashua; two daughters, Eleanor Ann (Marvin) Scharnhorst of Waverly, and Patricia Kaye Thompson of Charles City; one sister, Edith Vohsmann of Nashua; one sister-in-law, Eleanor Edson of Nashua; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Harland in 1977; a son, Harland "Mike" Caswell Jr. in 1977; four brothers, Alvin Dietz, George Dietz Jr., Charles Dietz, and Clarence Dietz; and four sisters, Emma Dietz, Effie Conklin, Bessie Runyan, and Martha Wagner.
