Nashua War Veteran Dies
Following Long Illness

Served in Civil War as Private First, Later as Lieutenant.

NASHUA, Nov. 9 - Caleb Ransom, one of the G. A. R. veterans of the community, died last night at the home of one of his sons here. His death was due to a series of complications.

He served in the Civil War in Company I, thirty-fourth Illinois infantry. He was wounded in the Battle of Stone River, by being shot thru the leg, and was honorable discharged and returned home. He later enlisted in Company G. one hundred and forty-second Illinois infantry, and was made second lieutenant and served until the close of the war.

One brother, Charles Ransom, an uncle, Ira Ransom, and three cousins served in the Civil War. His grandfather, George Palmer Ransom, served in the Revolutionary war and died when Mr. Ransom was 9 years old.

His great-grandfather, Capt. Samuel Ransom, was killed in the Wyoming massacre. Mr. Ransom had eight grandsons in the World War who are Lloyd, Bun and Lowell Ransom of Waterloo; Cole, Lawrence and Clark Knight of New Hampton; Chester Ransom of Milwaukee, Wis., Lester Potter of Winifred, S. Dak.

He is survived by 14 children. The three oldest, Mrs. Susie Potter, Will and David are dead. Those living are: Charley, Harry, Herman and Albert, who live near Ionia; Mack, Nashua; Oscar, Rose Creek, Minn.; Mrs. Gertie Trusty, Ionia; Mrs. Carrie Knight, New Hampton; Gale, Willis and Willard, at home.

He is also survived by 58 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and three brothers, George, of Idaho; Michael of Kansas, and Harrison of Ionia.
