MRS. KIRSCHMAN DIES AT AGE OF 81

PIONEER WOMAN OF COUNTY PASSES AWAY AFTER GRADUAL DECLINE

Mrs. Christina Kirschman, a pioneer woman of Chickasaw County, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Edson Sewell, on East Main Street, New Hampton, last Thursday, Oct. 18, 1917, at 10 o'clock in the morning. She was aged 81 years, two months and 18 days.

Mrs. Kirschman had been in declining health for a long time, and dissolution came as a result of extreme age. She retained her naturally bright mind until a short time before she passed away.

The maiden name of the deceased was Regena Christina Markle and she was born in Province Neuenburg, Germany, August 1, 1836. She came to America with her people when young, settling in New York state.

She was united in marriage with Andrew Kirschman at Utica, N.Y., February 6, 1862. They soon afterward came to Chickasaw county, settling on a farm in Utica township.

Mr. Kirschman passed away in 1879. Mrs. Kirschman remained on the farm until fourteen years ago, when she came to make her home in New Hampton, residing on Locust avenue north. Her declining health caused her to make her home with her daughter during the past year, and her closing days were thus made happy by the presence and the gentle ministrations of this devoted one.

Mrs. Kirschman was the mother of six children, of whom four survive. They are Attorney Fred Kirschman of Mason City, Amos of near Los Angeles, Cal., George of Tyndall, S.D., and Mrs. Sewell.

The funeral was held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Sewell home, services being conducted by Dr. D.M. Parker, pastor of the Congregational church of Fayette; and Interment was in Graceland.

Many friends of this venerable woman followed her remains to their last resting place.

Mrs. Kirschman was a woman of unusual physical ability and mental ability. She gave unsparingly of her labors through long years in order that opportunity might come to her children and independence be secured for herself.

She withstood the trials and hardships of early days with a courage and fortitude that was remarkable. She was reared in the Lutheran faith, and during her life she continued to follow the teachings of Christ.
