[Nashua Reporter, Wednesday, January 8, 1941, Nashua, Iowa]

Joel Benjamin Wheaton, son of Jane Howes and Samuel Wheaton, was born July 9, 1856, in Hillsdale County, Michigan.

When a small boy he moved with his parents to Wayne County, Iowa, where he grew to manhood. From there the family moved to Parkersburg, Iowa. It was there he married Mary Younker in a double wedding ceremony in which a sister, Julia Younker became the bride of James A. Bawn on Aug. 27, 1879.

In 1886 they moved to Plankinton. S. Dak., where they lived for seven years, experiencing extreme hardship of early pioneers.

In 1893 they left in a covered wagon for Lyon County, Iowa where they settled on a farm near Little Rock.

In 1907 they moved to park Rapids, Minn., where they purchased a farm.

Three years inter, they returned to Iowa settling on a farm near Nashua where they lived until March 1913 when they moved to the place in the west part of Nashua, which has since been their home.

On Aug. 27, 1929, with Mr. and Mrs. Bawn the celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

Shortly after this a series of misfortunes started to befall Mr. Wheaton. He contracted infection in his foot which almost cost him his life. Being of hardy stock he recovered, but the following year he fell and broke his hip and was confined to his bed for several months. Later he was stricken with hardening of the arteries which necessitated the amputation of his limb.

Through all his suffering he was kind and patient and after the similar experience of Mrs. Wheaton he did all he could to relive her burden and that of the daughters who care for him.

The death of his wife on Dec. 26, 1936 dealt him a sad blow, and he expressed himself many times as being ready to go whenever he should be called.

He was of jovial disposition, kind, honest, generous and always ready to lend a helping hand where needed.

Late Monday afternoon he complained of not feeling well. He gradually became worse and passed away at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, December 31, 1940.

He leaves to mourn his death ten children, namely: Merton Wheaton, and Jennie M. Essman, of Wllsworth, Monn.; Fred E. Wheaton, Park Rapids, Minn.; Eva D. Wheaton, Nashua; Verna A. Onstad, Park Rapids, Minn.; Ava Wumkes, Sioux Falls, S. Dak.; George B. Wheaton, Bangor, Mich.; Mary R. Wheaton, Nashua; Merle F. Baumgardner, Waterloo; Edith M. Hauser, Clarksville. Also 30 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

His two sisters and one brother preceded him in death.
