Harley William Wendt, age 81 of Fredericksburg died Wednesday, December 10, 2008, at the New Hampton Care Center.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 13, 2008, at Trinity Lutheran Church, New Hampton with Pastors Joel Dahlen and Kevin Frey officiating. Organist for the service will be Dennis Strum with the congregation singing "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and "On Eagles Wings". Inurnment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Fredericksburg, with urn bearers being his grandsons, Cory Wenthold, Aaron Wenthold and Jason Wenthold.

Friends may call 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Friday, December 12, 2008, at Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in New Hampton. Visitation continues an hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Harley was born February 16, 1927, on the Wendt family farm near Frederika, IA, the son of Ernest and Hulda (Mueller) Wendt. He attended rural country school and was a 1945 graduate of the Frederika High School. On November 20, 1945 he was inducted into the United States Navy and was honorably discharged as a Seaman First Class on July 21, 1946. On May 21, 1950 at St. John Lutheran Church in Frederika he married Margaret Karnatz. To this union three children were born.

The couple farmed on several farms in the Fredericksburg area. While engaged in farming, Harley also worked at the former White Farm Equipment Co., in Charles City and was a self-employed carpenter. Harley and Margaret loved the opportunity to spent 13 winters in Texas. Harley was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Frederika, was a long-time member of St. John Lutheran Church in Boyd, IA and the Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton. Harley loved polka dancing but especially the time he shared with his grandsons. He became a nursing home resident in 2001.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Margaret; one son, Ray (Cheryle) Wendt of Aurora, CO; one daughter, Marsha (David) Wenthold of Waucoma, IA; three grandsons, Cory Wenthold, Aaron Wenthold and Jason Wenthold; one brother, LaVern Wendt of New Hampton; a sister-in-law, Betty Wendt of New Hampton, many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Ranae Wendt; one brother, Lynford Wendt.
