Elgin Echo, Elgin, Iowa, Thur., 12 Nov. 1903.
Last Thursday in Deerfield township, Chickasaw county, Elma Bachman, a little girl 5 years old, was burned to death in a straw shed where she and a little brother and sister were hunting for some kittens with a lantern. The lantern tipped over and set the shed on fire. She was rescued from the burning straw by a man who saturated himself with water and plunged into the burning mass and dragged the body out with the aid of a pitchfork. She had been burned to a crisp and was almost unrecognizable when taken out of the flames.
