New Hampton, Iowa - John Howard, 88, oldest Civil war veteran in New Hampton, died at 4 a.m. Thursday as a result of pneumonia following influenza. A military funeral will be conducted Sunday, but details have not been arranged.

Mr. Howard was a native of Devonshire, England, where he was born May 6, 1844, and from whence he emigrated with his parents to Quebec, Canada, when he was six years old.

Later the family went to Bellevue, O., where he enlisted in 1864 in the United States marines for service in the Civil war. He went with the marines on a tour to Chile and Peru and thru the Magellen strait, which took three years and three months.

He bought a farm in Chickasaw county after discharge from service and operated it until retirement in 1914. Mr. Howard was one of the first Chickasaw county farmers to tile his land.

He married Ida Langdon in 1873. She died some years ago. Surviving are two sons and a daughter: Frank Howard, Dodge Center, Kan.; Fred Howard, New Hampton; Ethel Howard, Elgin, Ill.
