Mrs. C. Hayden Funeral Friday at Chickasaw

Operated a store there over fifty years

Ionia, Iowa - Cora A. Rowley Hayden was born in Chickasaw, Iowa October 20, 1869, the daughter of Charles and Abbie Rowley. She was married December 21, 1885 to John Hayden of Ionia. They made their home in Chickasaw. On December 27, 1889 her husband passed away leaving her with three small children.

She was an active worker in the Baptist Church holding several offices and sponsering several youth organizations. She was devoutly interested in all forms of christian work.

For fifty years she operated the Chicksaw store until ill health forced her to retire.

The latter part of last December, having been in poor health for several weeks, she was taken to Waterloo to the Allen Memorial Hospital. On January 11th she was taken to the home of her daughter, Mrs. M. C. Troutner at 224 Rainbow Drive, Waterloo, where she remained for seven months still under a physician's care. For a number of weeks she had longed to return to her own home, and on July 31st was brought back to Chickasaw. On Sunday evening, August 1st, she became very ill, so on Monday was brought to Charles City by ambulance to the home of another daughter, Mrs. O. P. Hammond. Her condition became serious, so she was taken to the Cedar Valley Hospital on Thursday. Loving hands did everything possible, but she passed away on Wednesday morning, August 11, 1948.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. M. C. Troutner of Waterloo and Mrs. O. P. Hammond of Charles City and a son, Merle C. Hayden of Waterloo; two sisters, Mrs. C. E. Hughes, of Ionia and Mrs. Maude Howard of Tehachapi, California; three grand sons; one grand daughter, and ten great grand children.

She will live forever in the hearts of her children and of her loved friends in Chickasaw.

The body was taken to the home of her sister, Mrs. C. E. Hughes at Ionia Thursday afternoon. Many friends came to pay their respects as she is among the oldest inhabitants in Chickasaw County and was loved and respected by all who knew her.

Friday morning a short service was held at the Hughes home, conducted by Rev. Emerson, pastor of the First Baptist Churches of New Hampton and Chickasaw. The body was taken to the Chickasaw Church where it lay in state until the funeral at 2 p.m.

Mrs. Hayden's favorite hymns were sung by Miss Henrietta Wolfe and Mrs. Mable Waite.

Interment was in Cedar View Cemetery, Chickasaw.

Pall bearers were Burl and Glen VanKleeck, John Cagley, Dale Fritcher, Ward Hammond and John Freebury.

Those in charge of the flowers were Mrs. Elva Cagley and Mrs. Hallie Smith, and two Sunbeam girls, Alice Wiltse and Phyllis Boggess.

The Chenoweth Funeral Home of Nashua was in charge of arrangements.
