BOY KILLED AT TARGET SHOOT
New Hampton Victim Was One of 3 Firing at Apples on Post

New Hampton – Funeral services for Robert Eschweiler, 13, eight grade parochial school boy, who was fatally shot Monday afternoon, will be at St. Mary’s Church here Thursday morning at 9 o’clock with the Rev. L. C. Iekel, pastor, officiating.

The young fellow was accidentally shot with a .22 caliber rifle that had been used by a group of playmates for target practice.
The group consisting of Robert, his brother, John Jr., Charles Merritt, Jr., and John Blankenheim had taken a rifle to a place about one mile northeast of the outskirts of New Hampton Monday afternoon. Using green apples, placed on top of a fence post the boys were taking turns shooting at the target.

Finally the younger Eschweiler boy, Robert, went to examine his last shot and as he walked to the target the gun was handed to Charles Merritt, Jr., also an eight grade pupi, who loaded the gun.

After examining the target the victim tuned about and in some manner, the gun was fired by young Merritt and it struck Robert in the chest, piercing his heart a physician said. He staggered a few steps and fell.

His excited playmates attempted to carry him to highway 85, which is nearly a mile away. However, after carrying him for about a block A. E. Kress, New Hampton grocer, who has a farm nearby, drove up. After a moment Mr. Kress told his companion that their playmate was dead. William M. Larkin, Chickasaw county coroner, said an investigation would be held. The official said there was no doubt about the death being accidental. The boy had been a newspaper carrier for three year.

Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Eschweiler; two sisters, Mila Mae of Spencer and Bernadette at home; two brothers, John, Jr., and Merle Francis.
