Blanche Croatt

Blanche Croatt, 87, of New Hampton and formerly of Waucoma, died Monday, March 22, 1999, at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of natural causes.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 25, at 11 a.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waucoma with the Rev. Raphael Ludwig celebrating the mass.

The pall will be placed on the casket by her four children. Interment will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Waucoma.

The Larkin-Martin-Hugeback Funeral Home of Lawler is handling arrangements.

Grandsons Kevin Croatt, Keith Croatt, John Croatt, Mike Moellers, Douglas Wieck, Dennis Schmitt, Darrell Schmitt, Wayne Schmitt and Dean Schmitt were casket bearers.

Blanche (Tierney) Croatt was born Sept. 8, 1911, in rural Chickasaw County, near Little Turkey, the daughter of Dennis and Margaret (Sheridan) Tierney. She attended rural country school in Fayette County.

She obtained her teacher's certificate from the Iowa State Teachers college and taught school for six years before she was married to John Croatt June 16, 1936, at Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler.

Blanche and her husband farmed near Waucoma. Her husband, John, died July 8, 1953. She remained on the farm until 1972, at which time she moved to the town of Waucoma.

Blanche lived in Waucoma until she became a resident of the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in 1990.

Memberships included St. Mary's Catholic Church and Rosary Society in Waucoma and the Catholic Daughters of America. Blanche also enjoyed gardening, baking and playing cards.

Survivors include two daughters, Dorma and Dale Wieck of Rochester, Minn., and Shirley and Alex Schmitt of West Union; two sons, David and Elaine Croatt of Lawler and Gerald and Kris Croatt of Ossian; a sister, Mrs. Hazel Meyer of New Hampton; 17 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

Blanche Croatt was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; a son Duane in infancy; a grandson, James Croatt; and two sisters, Mrs. Mabel Smith and Bernette Bakula.
