First Sheriff of Cherokee County when Iowa became a State

We are led to believe that my husband's Great Grandfather was the first Sheriff of Cherokee County when Iowa became a state. His name was George Washington Wheeler and he died in May of 1907. We would like to verify this if anyone has access to any information. Thank you very much in advance!
