Elsie M. Covey Passes Away
Elsie Maria Covey, 91, daughter of Per Persson & Wilhelmina Steinbeck Persson passed away Monday, Jan 28, following a short illness.Her home was at 431 W. Cherry St. and she has been a resident of Cherokee most of the time since 1907. She was born on Nov. 23, 1888 in Eagle Lake Township, Ottertail Co., Minn. on a farm homesteaded by her father. She was married to Arthur B. Covey on Sept. 15, 1909 at the Methodist parsonage in Cherokee, Iowa. She came to Cherokee in 1907 to work at the Cherokee State Hospital, she remained there until her marriage in 1909. Most of her life, she spent on farms in Iowa, Minnesota and Oregon. She was a member of the Lutheran Church; she was a charter member of the Cherokee Chapter of Pythian Sisters.
She is survived by 4 nieces and 1 nephew.: Violet E. Barnes of San Ysidro, Calif.; Iris Lee Casey of Portland, Ore.; May, dau. of brother Paul; Halcyon Gould of Aurelia, Iowa; Jack Miller of San Francisco, Calif. The last 8 years she has been living with her grand Nephew, George K. Pettengill of Cherokee, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1956, 3 brothers, Paul August, Weimer Carl, Eurdroy Alexander and 2 sisters, Erna Riggs and Violet Miller.
Private Family services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 30, from the Boothby Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Cherokee, Iowa. (Source: Cherokee Daily Times, Cherokee, Iowa, Thurs., Jan 31, 1980, pg. 2)
