Cherokee County News - The body of Dr. George Donohoe, 56, superintendent of Cherokee state hospital for the last 17 years, who died at Rochester, Minn., Friday afternoon, was escorted by American Legion men from the depot to Appleyard and Boothby funeral home Saturday morning.

Dr. Donohoe died in a Rochester hospital, following an abdominal operation performed Tuesday to correct a recurrence of stomach ulcers.

Mrs. Donohoe and two daughters, Florence, a senior at the State University of Iowa, and Louise, a senior in the local high school, who were at his bedside, have returned to Cherokee.

Military funeral services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at the Catholic church. Burial as requested by Dr. Donohoe and approved by the state board of control, will be on the state hospital grounds east of the administration building. American Legion men will be in charge of interment. The body will lie in state at the hospital Sunday from two to five o'clock. George Wilson, Jr., Randall Jacobs, Lester C. Ary, John Loughlin, Harry Williams and Wm. Pastons, assistant supervisor of the state hospital, will be pall bearers.

Dr. Donohoe was a nationally known authority on mental diseases and of management of state hospitals. He was graduated from the Harvard Medical school in 1898, having specialized in neurology and psychiatry. He came to Iowa in 1905, serving as a member of the medical staff of the state hospital at Independence for five years and later as superintendent of the hospital for inebriates at Knoxville for five years. Since March 1915, he has been head of the Cherokee hospital, raising it to its present model condition.

Dr. Donohoe was born in Boston, Mass., in 1876. He was educated in the Boston public schools before entering Harvard Medical school.

He served his internship at the Massachusetts General hospital. Following this he went to Nova Scotia as a physician for a construction company, remaining there for two years.

In 1900 he came to Lake Geneva, Wis., and was an assistant on the staff of a general private sanitarium until 1905 when he entered the state service of Iowa at the Independence State hospital.

He was married in 1907 in Chicago to Florence Andrews. There are two children, Florence, age 20 and Louise, age 17.

Dr. Donohoe was commissioned a major in the Medical Corps of the United States Army in September 1918. He was a Companion of the first class of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion, his father, Brigadier General Michael Thomas Donohoe, having served with distinction in the Civil War. He was commander of Treptow post, American Legion in 1930, one of the organizers and the former president of the Cherokee Country club, and former president of the Cherokee Rotary club. He was consulting psychiatrist to the Sioux City Welfare Bureau, chairman of the Eugenics board, a member of the American Medical association, Sioux Valley Medical society, Cherokee county Medical society, the council of the American Psychiatric association and a member of the National Committee for Mental Hygiene.

Two sisters, Adeline and Ella of Boston, and one brother, Frank, of Montclaire, N.J. survive.
