Lt. Col. Robert N. Florine, 70, Sutherland, died Sept 8 at 2:20 p.m. in the Marian Health Center in Sioux City following a lingering illness.

Funeral services will be held Sept 11 from the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sutherland. There will be a Scripture service on Friday evening at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery at Sutherland with military rites at the graveside by the Sutherland American Post #152.

He was born March 14, 1923, in Cherokee to Knute and Christin Norgaard Florine. He graduated from Larrabee High School in 1940. He enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps in 1941 serving as a pilot during World War II. He was married to Frances Powell on Sept. 5, 1945, in Sutherland. Following his discharge, he worked for the Illinois Central Railroad for a short time. He then went to school at Buena Vista College at Storm Lake. He then was engaged in farming in Cherokee County until 1964 when they moved to a farm near Sutherland, where he farmed until his partial retirement in 1983. He had worked for Lundell Manufacturing and Wilson Food Corp. in Cherokee and Eaton Corp. in Spencer. He moved into Sutherland on Aug. 18, 1993.

He was a member of the American Legion Post at Sutherland. He was also a member of the United States Air Corps Retired Officers Assoc. and the 8th Air Force Pilot Group.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Jim Florine in 1986, also three brothers and three sisters.

He is survived by his wife Frances; one son, Ed and wife Janet of Cherokee; four daughters, Mary jo and husband Jim Brennan of Jackson, Minn.; Janet and husband Forest Ducommun of Neosho, Mo.; Nancy and husband Tom Richards of Nevada; Julie Florine of Downey, Calif.; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Sherry Florine of Marceline, Mo.; 18 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and three sisters, Dr. Charlotte Florine of Honolulu, Hawaii; Gladys Florine Flint of Minneapolis, Minn.; and Patricia Pokorny of Birmingham, Ala.
